The MOS 6581 SID (Sound Interface Device)

Engineered by Bob Yannes (later founder of Ensoniq), the SID was not a crude square-wave beeper, but a true three-voice subtractive synthesizer:

3 Independent Voices: Sawtooth, Triangle, Variable Pulse (PWM), and Noise waveforms.
Hardware ADSR Envelopes: Programmable Attack, Decay, Sustain, and Release per voice.
Analog Multi-Mode Filter: 12dB/octave Low-pass, High-pass, Band-pass, and Notch with controllable resonance.
Ring Modulation & Hard Sync: For metallic textures and complex lead sounds.
